Pigeon problems are one of the most common complaints we receive here at United Wildlife from property owners. These problems are made more complicated when some people have a different idea about what ought to happen to the dirty birds. This is an e-mail I recently received from a worried woman in Salt Lake City, UT:
“We have pigeons living in our attic. My father is a stubborn man who refuses to understand they have made a huge family and are living up there. This past summer he did not want to remove them because they had babies and my father didn’t want to “kill” them. I need to know how much you charge for pigeon removal. I am concerned on the health of my family. Sarah T.”
I can surely understand her concern; these birds are truly dirty birds and pose significant health risks, both physical and mental. They carry and transmit an amazing variety of diseases from histoplasmosis to West Nile Virus.
I am certain the family is huge, since they have been there a few years. They multiply rapidly. A single pair can raise four or five batches of babies each year. Very quickly the noise and mess associated is more than enough reason for most people to want pigeon removal.
But how do we respect the father? Exclusion is an option, using various repellents, but trapping is the most effective method of pigeon removal and can be done quietly, often without people even being aware it is going on. It takes a few weeks, but suddenly the birds are gone.
There will be a lot of mess to clean up. We can help with that, too. No pigeon removal is complete until every memory (and attractant) of the birds is gone. Cleanup requires hazmat equipment like masks and specific disposal techniques to keep everyone safe. The odor and bacteria will even be gone after we use our enzyme cleaners and experience to return your home to normal.
Home repair and maintenance are the final step. The animals got in somehow and if you do not replace that broken vent, or tighten that soffit you will be doing another pigeon removal next year.
